Job Opportunity: Front End Developer

Friday 23rd September 2011

Location: Newcastle upon Tyne, St. Albans or Remote

What we are looking for

We are seeking a talented front-end developer with excellent CSS, HTML, Ajax skills. You should be comfortable building sites from scratch producing fantastic clean, semantic markup without the need for frameworks.

You should also have experience building rock solid, standards compliant, cross-browser compatible websites along with a good to excellent understanding of JavaScript and when to use it; you will be comfortable writing your own functions rather than rely on plugins (or writing your own plugins). A keen eye for design and an understanding of user experience design would be an advantage. You likely have an interest in emerging trends: canvas, media queries, flexible grids, and draft CSS3 enhancements.

We want you to work on our next generation web applications.  You will have a passion for creating simple, clean and intuitive interfaces, but also a working knowledge of some of the technologies to deliver leading edge, interactive sites and applications.  The successful candidate will become a key member of a small, passionate team with a rapidly expanding company focused on deploying innovative products.

We are also looking for someone who will be a knowledge resource for the latest trends and technologies for web interface design and development.  You will work to actively assist in improving the usability, usefulness and desirability of our applications.

This position is contract-based, with possibility to become full-time. We have two bases - St. Albans, near London and Newcastle upon Tyne.  We would prefer someone local, but we are happy working with someone who is remote if they are exceptional.

Please note: If you do not have an existing portfolio of work that you have done, please do not apply.

Specific Skills

Technical

Obviously this is an ever-changing landscape, but here are the skills we feel we are looking for:

First and foremost, you should have an excellent eye for design. You should know great web UI when you see it, and be able to explain why it’s great (even if you didn’t create it!).

Strong command of visual design capabilities, including composition, layout information hierarchy, typography and colour.

Conduct ongoing research of web-based user interface development best practices. Introduce emerging user interface technologies into the stack

Work on new features and functionality and suggest improvements to other areas of the applications based on user feedback.

Contribute to the overall look and feel of the brand through clean, efficient use of web standards and optimisation

Apply graphic design principles including layout, typography, and color theory with strong skills in information hierarchy.

Fluency with web standards and technologies, including HTML5, CSS, Javascript

Extensive experience with JavaScript frameworks (e.g. Prototype, jQuery).

Deep experience with maintaining cross-browser compatibility (multiple versions of Safari, Firefox, Chrome and IE)

Finally, you should have a solid portfolio. We want to see that you’ve built great web interfaces before, not just great websites.

Personal…

Can work both independently and in a group, without daily management

Have excellent communication skills

Works well under pressure

Enjoys startup environments

Compensation includes competitive salary and benefits.
